Rayagada is a beautiful and mineral rich city situated in the southern part of Odisha. The city is quite popular among the tourists for its attractive gateways. The city of Rayagada is administrative headquarter and was founded on 2nd October 1992. Apart from the scenic beauty, the city is famous for its glorious historic records. The city population is mainly dominated by tribals. Among the tribal population, Kondhas are in the majority. The main occupation of the city is agriculture and animal husbandry. The major crops in the region include Paddy, wheat, ragi, green gram, black gram, groundnut, sweet potato and maize. Within past few years, the city of Rayagada has grown tremendously, and the government has also contributed toward building infrastructure.

Brief History of Rayagada

History of RayagadaThe history of the Rayagada is very glorious and fascinating. Several copper coins and rock inscriptions are found from the region that depicts the rich history of the city. According to many historians, the city has been a hub of trade and commerce in ancient times. During the third century, B.C, the region of Rayagada was under the rule of Mauryan Empire governed by the great emperor of Kalinga, Ashoka the Great. In ancient days, the hilly terrain between Bansadhara and Nagabali was famous for spices. Kharvela, the only Aryan Emperor of Kalinga, defeated Rastriks clan during the battle of Chawpagada. The region of Rayagada was ruled by the Dadarnab Dev of Gudari Kataka, the feudatory chief of Kalinga-Utkala Empire, during the rule of Gangavansi and Suryavanshi Kings in the state of Odisha.

In year 1519, when Mukund Dev, the last Hindu Gajapati emperor of Odisha was defeated at Gohera Tikiri, the region went under the rule of Bahamanis. The region then came under the rule of Nandapur Kingdom for 47 years. The third king installed in the region of Rayagada; Biswambar Dev was defeated and murdered by Mughal Chicacole Sarkar rulers, Hasin Khan. The city of Rayagada is surrounded by Sati Kunda Goddess Majhi Ghairani and the mudfort that indicates the glorious history of past. Later the region of Rayagada went under the Bobbili Tahasil ofVijayanagaram. Under the British East India Company, Rayagada came under the administration of Jeypore and later became part of Koraput district. On 2nd Oct, 1992, the region of Rayagada was carved out of erstwhile Koraput district as a part of district expansion in Odisha. However, in the present day the city of Rayagada has developed significantly.

Rayagada coordinates at 19.17°N and 83.42°E at an elevation of 207 m (679 ft). The region of Rayagada is covered with dense forest, waterfalls, meadows and hilly terrain. Rayagada is mainly occupied by local tribal population. The natural and scenic beauty of the place is still unexplored. Apart from tribal people, the city is also inhabited by people from different race, language, and culture. The majority of the population in the city depends on agriculture and seed cultivation. Since independence, various mining institutions like IMFA, JKPAPER mills are extracting minerals from the region and strengthening Indian economy. Rayagada is mainly known for its rich mineral sources, majorly bauxite and silicon. In Odisha, Rayagada has 84% of bauxite storage. Culture of Rayagada

All major festivals like Holi, Diwali, Eid and Dushehra are celebrated with great fervor and joy in the city. Few other local festivals in Rayagada includes Chaiti Festival, Chaitra Parba, Rath Yatra, Subha udbodhan mahostav, Gram Devata Puja, Kali Puja, etc. Chaiti Festival is celebrated by the tribal population for three days in a year. The festival is followed by the Pallishree Mela. This festival is officially observed by the government in Rayagada district and is known as Rayagada Mahotsav. This festival is one of the major cultural fests to boost tribal customs among the localities and tourists. Rath Yatra is yet another festival that is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Odisha. This festival symbolizes the transporting deities on a chariot by the followers.

The region also has good connectivity via roads. The nearest highway, NH-43 passes 109 Km away from Rayagada at Koraput. Several state buses passes through the city of Rayagada. The city also has several auto rickshaw and tempos for transportation within the city. Most of the local residents use cycle and scooters for their personal transportation. The nearest airport is in the capital city of Odisha, Bhubaneswar.

Although, the city of Rayagada is relatively small as compared with the capital city of Bhubaneswar, but the city offer everything that is required for day to day household. The city is dotted with several apparel, utensil, footwear and furniture stores. Majhiguda, Gumma, and Dahikhal are famous markets in the region.
